Aging research began with the discovery of the lifespan-extending effects of caloric restriction. The identification of multiple regulatory pathways of aging through molecular genetic studies has ushered in an era in which individual lifespan and aging phenomena are considered at the molecular level. Screening for small-molecule compounds that control the activity of key molecules has led to the external control of the lifespan-regulating pathway. In fact, the accumulation of anti-aging preclinical experiments in model systems is being expanded to human clinical applications and the anti-aging effects are being verified. In this review, we summarize the history of basic aging research, outline the major lifespan and aging control pathways, and discuss the feasibility of extending healthy lifespans through anti-aging.
