Embryologists may experience educational inequality and different job duties because both depend on the facility where they are employed. To discover the actual situation, a questionnaire survey was conducted at facilities in Japan which performed assisted reproductive technology between January and March in 2022. Out of 621 facilities, 246 (40%) sent back reply forms. The answers revealed that there was a wide variety in job content and the education conducted while at work. The period required for a new embryologist to acquire the skills for embryo freezing and thawing was one year, and two years for intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection. Our survey results also demonstrate that the appropriate cycle number of ovum pick-up for one embryologist is 80 in one year, and that approximately 40% of new embryologists resign during their first five years. To prevent resignations, based on multivariate analysis, it is recommended that the number of embryologists is arranged properly, the curriculum for their education is improved, and that we should not be particular about hiring experienced embryologist.
