Recent trends of senior embryologists in Japan

The Japan Society for Ova Research certifies embryologists and fulfills its social responsibility to ensure their quality. New assisted reproductive technologies are rapidly being introduced in assisted reproductive medicine, and the acquisition of these technologies is directly related to the treatment outcome. In addition, introducing new technologies requires even greater consideration of ethical issues. The Japan Society for Ova Research has established qualifications for senior embryologists as part of its efforts to develop human resources to manage and supervise embryologists in a leadership position. Senior embryologists are embryologists who possess advanced knowledge, ability, and ethics regarding assisted reproductive technology. This advanced knowledge and ability refers to the ability to design, maintain, and manage culture rooms, supervise embryologists, and provide appropriate advice to clinical physicians. In this article, we discuss the expected role of the supervising embryologist and the status of obtaining this certification which will help increase the number of supervising embryologists.
